Summer vacation is here and kids everywhere are on the lookout for ways to have fun and consequently, spend money. But that doesn’t have to be the case this year! Instead, take the opportunity with your kids out of school to teach them about saving money, spending well, and spend some good old-fashioned quality time with them while you have the chance. In other words, relax responsibly.
But how can you make this summer unforgettable and fun without blowing the bank and staying financially productive? We’ve got some ideas!
Plant A Garden
Planting a garden is one of the most cost effective things a family can do. Save money on those expensive fruits and vegetables this Summer, Fall and even winter! Did you know you can grow lettuce when it’s cold??
There are many ways to squeeze additional savings out of a garden, too. Don’t throw a dime away on costly fertilizers, because you can compost kitchen waste! Potato peels, egg shells, coffee grounds, stems, seeds, etc. You can also find reclaimed wood to make more efficient raised beds, especially from things like pallets and shipping containers. Save seeds from your produce to use next year and save money and water your garden with collected rainwater! Genius, or what??
Planting a garden doesn’t just save you loads of money. It can also be a way to encourage your family to eat more vegetables. Tending and caring for a patch of vegetables can be a great way to build responsibility and have fun outdoors this summer….and spend quality time together as a family!
Have a Yard Sale!
If there’s one important lesson to teach our children about saving money, it’s that less=more. Teach your children to get rid of things they don’t need. Have a yard sale and have your child or children help with the process every single step of the way.
Let them put prices on items, let neighbors know when the sale is, help make signs and if they’re old enough, teach them math and responsibility by running the cash box. What is possibly better than decluttering and making a few extra dollars while you’re at it? Get the junk out and bring the money in! All while spending time with your child, teaching responsibility and real life skills.
Plan a StayCation Instead of a Vacation
The cost for the average family to go on vacation gets higher every year. Instead of blowing thousands of dollars on a vacation for the family, plan a StayCation and explore the area around you. Visit local museums, eat at some really nice restaurants and come home to your own beds at night. Maybe go camping in the backyard and have banana splits for a cheap, fun-filled family experience.
There are plenty of things to do this summer that don’t involve blowing every cent in your bank account. Or you know, even getting close to doing that. Save money and still have fun with a financially productive summer this year and let us know how it goes!
